The Prothrombin Time (PT) test measures how long it takes for blood to clot through the extrinsic and common coagulation pathways.It is commonly combined with INR (International Normalized Ratio) to standardize results across different labs and reagents. The test is done to monitor anticoagulant therapy, pre-surgical screening, suspected bleeding disorders and more. Prolonged PT has been observed in congenital or acquired deficiencies of factor II,V,VII,X or fibrinogen, Liver failure, Vitamin K antagonist /hypovitaminosis K, Fibrinolysis, DIC.
